What Can I Expect at the First Treatment?
Generally in someone's first treatment with me, we do a complete initial health assessment from a Chinese Medicine perspective. (However, if you've had acupuncture before and/or recently OR you have a Western medical diagnosis already to which acupuncture will provide complimentary care, your first treatment might be shorter or varied. We respect persons who have already gone through more than one intake with other doctors.)
At the diagnosis stage, I'll listen to you about your health history and ask questions. We'll listen to your pulse and look at your tongue. During the treatment, you'll receive one to twenty needles, which are paper thin and illicit a relaxing response on the body. You'll lay with those needles for 15 - 45 minutes, usually under a warm lamp. You are clothed during the session, unless you are unable to come in loose and comfortable clothing. Patients with pain or injury recovery as their main complaint may also receive topical applications of herbal oils, TENS stimulation, and/or ultrasound. Herbs may or may not be recommended. We try to offer cost effective approaches to herbal supplementation, starting with herbs you can incorporate from your own pantry and gradually trying stronger formulas tailored for your condition, if necessary. After the treatment, you will hopefully feel refreshed and relaxed. You may feel tired, which is normal. |
